Selection and Seeds

Seeds are the carriers of biological and morphological characteristics and properties of a plant. This is why crop yields largely depend on the seed quality.

At the root of seed production is selection – a science that deals with breeding of new and improvement of already existing varieties of various agricultural plants.
Selection’s most important task is to obtain new crop varieties with properties that are superior to those of the previous generation.

A variety (of a crop) is a group of cultivated plants of one species that has certain agricultural and biological properties as well as morphological characteristics. The latter characterize a given genotype or combination of genotypes, and hence they differ among different varieties of plants of the same botanical taxon by one or another characteristic. Moreover, the new variety should provide a maximized yield, and high growth and resistance performance in given soils and climates.

The main tasks of selection are: creation of source materials for crops; production of a comprehensive assessment of new varieties that were bred out; as well as selective reproduction, testing and adaptation of certain varieties to new or different climate conditions. And one of the final objectives of selection is to introduce the new improved seed varieties to the mass seed production.
